Teaching Mosaic Art to Children

Teaching children mosaic art is energetic, joyful, and completely different from teaching adults — and I love it.

Kids approach mosaic with openness. They are bold with color. They experiment freely. They are less concerned with perfection and more interested in making something that feels exciting and personal.

What children need most is structure and safety paired with creative freedom. In my youth mosaic classes, the focus is on:

  • Safe tool handling
  • Clear, simple demonstrations
  • Strong foundational techniques
  • Step-by-step guidance
  • Building confidence through completion

When a child finishes a mosaic, the pride is immediate and visible. They see that they can take many small pieces and turn them into something whole. That realization builds confidence that extends far beyond the art table.

Some of my earliest teaching experiences began in my garage studio with neighborhood children. Those classes shaped what Maverick Mosaics stands for today: art that is hands-on, accessible, skill-based, and empowering at every age.

Mosaic art is especially powerful for young learners because it strengthens:

  • Fine motor skills
  • Problem-solving abilities
  • Patience and sequencing
  • Design awareness
  • Creative decision-making

It is active learning. Children cut, place, adjust, and solve visual challenges as they go. They are fully engaged in the process.

Whether in schools, community programs, or workshops, my goal is the same: to give children the tools and guidance they need to succeed — and to let them experience the joy of making something real with their own hands.

In recent years, I’ve stepped back from regularly teaching children — it requires tremendous energy and focus. However, I continue to lead a a few community-based installations through the Maverick Legacy program, working with young people to create meaningful, lasting mosaic projects.
