Teaching Mosaic Art to Adults

For more than two decades, I’ve taught mosaic art to adults who are ready to learn real skills and create meaningful work. Some arrive with artistic backgrounds. Many have not made art in years. Almost all come with curiosity — and a little uncertainty.

What they quickly discover is that mosaic art is both structured and deeply satisfying. It rewards patience, attention, and thoughtful design.

Before COVID, I taught Contemporary Mosaics through the Smithsonian Institution Studio Arts Department in eight-week sessions that met three hours per week. The format felt like a college course. Students committed to the full process. We studied:

  • Design principles and composition
  • Andamento and visual flow
  • Materials and substrates
  • Adhesives and proper application
  • Glass cutting techniques
  • Grouting and finishing methods

By the end of those eight weeks, students were producing technically strong, well-designed mosaic artworks. The growth was visible. When adults are given time, structure, and high expectations, they rise to meet them.

My teaching approach remains consistent:

  • Clear, step-by-step instruction
  • Strong emphasis on craftsmanship
  • Professional studio practices
  • Honest, constructive feedback
  • Encouragement without unnecessary fluff

Making great mosaic art requires both creativity and discipline. Adults appreciate that balance. They want to understand why a technique works, how materials behave, and how to elevate their design choices.

Whether in a multi-week course or a focused workshop, the most rewarding moment is always the same — when a student steps back, studies their work, and says, “I made that.”

It might be worth revisiting—not to replicate it perfectly, but to see what remains. You may discover that the seeds of your creative voice were there all along, quietly waiting to hover back into view.
